For new parents a baby with poor sleeping habits can be a distressing thing. Swaddling has been advocated by leading physicians such as Leo Donnan, orthopaedic surgeon and Chief of Surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, as an effective way of settling a restless infant, but if not performed in a safe fashion can have the unforeseen consequence of affecting the development of the babies hips and even to the point of dislocation.  Many studies have shown that tight wrapping in the "papoose" position - with the legs held straight - can lead to hip dysplasia and dislocation.  When this practice is stopped the frequency of dislocation drops significantly.  So, when wrapping babies, it's now recommended to leave enough room for their legs to move freely.

ErgoPouch products are ergonomically designed with a bell-shaped bottom for extra legroom and made from stretchy organic cotton or bamboo to allow babies to move their legs comfortably and adopt the 'frog-leg' position. In fact, our swaddles are perfect for babies who have hip dysplasia as they can be used with legs free if needed, while still keeping the arms comfortably swaddled. We’ve even tested our ergoCocoon on baby Grace, born with hip dysplasia as a result of a breech position - it fitted comfortably over her brace with room to spare. Our airCocoon is a similar shape and can be rolled up to allow the legs to be completely free if preferred.

As such ErgoPouch baby swaddles, sleep sacks and sleep suits have recently received “hip-healthy” designation from The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI).  The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of those afflicted with hip dysplasia.

“We are thrilled to receive this designation from the International Hip Dysplasia Institute,” said Alina Sack, Founder, ergoPouch.  “Baby’s health and comfort is at the forefront of every ergoPouch design and we’re pleased to be recognized for our products which promote healthy hip development during infancy by an organization of this calibre.”

“There is no origami and no wrapping involved when using an ergoCocoon or AirCocoon, they keep even the most determined Houdini babies snug!  For this reason the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) has recognized these products as “Hip-Healthy”.”
